Hello, lovelies!
Throughout the years, I have gathered a wide collection of makeup brushes. Some of them have an outstanding quality and some are just average. Nevertheless, they are all in a great shape, regardless of how long I’ve been using them. I owe it to the care and proper storage. Today, I’d like to tell you a few words about how to take care of makeup brushes to make the best of them for long as possible.
How often should you wash your makeup brushes?
Foundation brushes, cream eyeshadow brushes, and lipstick brushes should be cleaned every day. The remains of the wet and greasy cosmetics are a habitat for bacteria. However, brushes for dry products, such as loose powders or pressed eyeshadows, can be refreshed every second or third day.
What products to use for cleaning brushes and how to do it?
- I start the procedure with soaking my brushes in a micellar water. I pour just enough liquid into a glass to cover only the bristles, not the handle. I put the brushes in a tall glass facing the brush down! This way it will prevent the water from sitting in the glue base which will make the bristles fall out too soon. I leave it for about 15 minutes.
- At the same time, in a separate bowl, I combine liquid soap and coconut oil. I also have another bowl with only soap. I use them to cleans the lipstick and foundation brushes as they are the most difficult to cleanse due to the oily and heavy consistency.
First, I dip the brush in a mixture of oil and soap. The soap itself will not wash away the remnants of these cosmetics; only oil can dissolve oil. While cleaning, I gently knead the brush and make movements like when applying make-up. When it’s clean, I immerse it in a bowl of soap and repeat the action. - Brushes for dry cosmetics are to be washed with ordinary olive soap or an antibacterial soap. I clean the brush gently and use the same technique as for the lipstick and foundation brushes. You can also use a shampoo with a high content of SLS. However, if you use soap, it is worth applying (and rinse!) a hair conditioner after cleaning. Especially if the brush is made of natural bristles.
- Then, I get rid of excess water by squeezing the bristles (gently!) not pulling. It may cause loosening and, as a result, bristle loss.
How to dry makeup brushes?
- You can place a folded towel at the corner of the table. Before you put down the brushes, form their bristles to give them their natural and proper shape.
- Next, arrange the brushes so that the bristles protrude beyond the edge of the table. Keep them at room temperature. Drying at a higher temperature, or worse, on a radiator, can cause the brushes to stick out and fall out. I keep dried brushes in special guards to maintain their shape. Thanks to proper care brushes will serve us for a long time 🙂
Tip! If you don’t have a brush guard, just tide the brush with an elastic band and hand it upside down with the cloth pin, it will work the same.
