Hey!
The spring’s arrived but my nails haven’t fully recovered from the winter damage yet. That’s why I’m using different remedies to make them healthier, stronger and nicer, and I feel like sharing them with you. Keep reading for top tips on nail conditioners and treatments for better nails.
Sit back and read on.
Causes of weak nails
My nails look worse after winter. This is probably because I fail to deliver optimal amounts of nutrients in the cold months, for example because of limited access to fresh vegetables. Besides, our immunity system goes through a rough patch in the winter, which entails worse-looking hair, skin, and nails.
Other possible causes include:
- lack of nail care (you don’t use any conditioners).
- nail polish containing formaldehyde.
- using expired products.
- biting the nails and cuticles.
- not using a hand lotion, meaning lack of moisturizing.
- lack of protection while house cleaning.
- hormonal imbalance.
- stress, unhealthy diet, smoking, diseases, etc.
As can be seen, there are various causes of weak nails but luckily the remedies are the same no matter the cause.
How to strengthen weak nails?
First and foremost, strengthen them from within, meaning, you need to tweak your daily menu adding more vitamins, minerals and healthy fatty acids through whole grain bread, vegetables, fish, nuts and oils. You can use supplements – tablets or herbal teas – to replenish the nutrients in the winter. Try to use different remedies to care for the nails comprehensively.
However, nail conditioning products are best for strengthening the nails. There are two options because you either get a readymade product or use a natural alternative. I’ll tell you about both because I believe each one boasts great potential.
Natural Nail Conditioners
When it comes to natural ingredients that we have at home and can use on nails, oils are definitely the best choice. Not the only one, though! See the best natural nail strengtheners.
- Castor oil – you just need to rub it into the nails regularly to make them stronger, shinier, smoother, and to stimulate faster growth.
- Argan oil is the most popular oil; it repairs, hardens, and adds elasticity, plus protects against external aggressors.
- Shea butter – I love it for being so smooth, moisturizing, nourishing and strengthening the nail plates, and softening the cuticles.
- Petroleum jelly – I use it least often but I’ve heard it’s very good for nails, making them stronger and protecting them.
- Olive oil – cold-pressed, unrefined olive oil is good for warm nail soak for more resilient nails.
Drugstore Nail Conditioners
I haven’t got many recommendations because I mostly use the above home remedies. If I go for readymade conditioner I always make sure it is rich in natural oils, plant extracts, etc. Other ingredients that make good components of nail conditioner are: panthenol, vitamin B5 and proteins, eg. keratin which builds the nails.
Sally Hansen is my favorite brand. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. I’ve tested many of their products and have always been happy with the results because they strengthen the nails and give a healthy shine fast. The brand offers a wide range of products so everyone will find the right one.
Let me know how you help your nails bounce back after winter.
Take care!
